What you’ve just done can be defined as a detox, a reset or a cleanse. And anyone who has ever completed one knows it comes with highs and lows.

There may be headaches, gas and real withdrawal symptoms as your body recalibrates. And that’s just the physical side. You also may experience irritation and brain fog as you move through to the other side.

Then there’s the triumphant finish line! A time to feel proud and – hopefully – more clear, energetic and happy. Furthermore, you should have a couple or a few kgs too. If not, rest assured that if you keep on this trajectory that won’t be too far away.

 

So what now?

 

Some of you will be on a roll and continue with your fabulous new habits. And some of you might reach for the nearest sugary treat, piece of bread or coffee. Which you may live to regret.

If you cave, don’t worry, look at it as a learning curve.

As you may have picked up during the 21-Days tip series our advice is to pick yourself up, brush yourself off and get back on track. This takes about half a day.

 

4 Habits To Incur Post-Cleanse

1. Drink Lemon Water Every Morning

This is a simple habit to keep going with. Our bodies are made up of a large percentage of water so we need it after a night of releasing fluids through breathing, sweating and loo breaks. What’s more, lemon juice helps the liver with its job of detoxification. In fact, this study found it could even help protect and repair an alcohol-damaged liver. You can amp it up by adding some sea or Himalayan salt to the mix. Salt actually helps us maintain the levels of fluid in our bodies.

 

2. Keep Up The Fermented Foods

The gut is just as important as the liver when it comes to happy hormones, happy weight and happy lives. You probably know by now that 70 percent of our immune system lies in the gut. Furthermore, more and more research is showing many other essential components to being vibrantly well, stem from there as well.

The standard 21st Century Western diet takes a toll on our digestive system making it hard for it to eliminate toxins. We need to ensure we keep building the levels of good bacteria (aka microbiome) in our gut. Fermented foods help us do this (kefir, sauerkraut, kombucha) as does eating seasonally and locally. If you get locally grown produce or grow your own there are microbes in that lovely soil.

 

3. Remember the 3’s

Eat PFF:

  1. (lean) protein
  2. (good) fat
  3. (fabulous) fibre.

Avoid:

  1. Gluten
  2. Sugar
  3. Most dairy

It’s incredible how limiting or avoiding these can impact our physicality as well as our mental wellbeing.

It’s not about cutting out food groups. What’s key here is working out what works best for us. We’re all bio individuals so what works for one person may not be the solution for another.

I’m a peach, she’s a pineapple and you’re a pear. As humans, we’re all different yet very similar. At the end of the day, no one knows your own body better than you.

 

4. The 80/20 Rule

We find living by the 80/20 rule works for us. Or even the 90/10. This means following the good guidelines you know work for you best 80 percent (or 90 percent) of the time and allowing yourself some leeway 20 percent (or 10 percent) of the time.

Jenna’s note: because I run this programme I’ve done the 21-Days back to back a couple of times. I’ve done this because I’ve found it helpful to do it along with everyone else.

In doing some there have been lots of lessons learned. It’s taught me is that after six weeks the results are incredible. And after nine even more so and that’s with taking a break of a week or so in between. These include:

  • Weight loss without leaving a saggy belly.
  • Mental clarity.
  • Feeling great.
  • A higher happiness quotient.
